New counter opens at Lochgilphead Post Office as demand remains steady
Lochgilphead Post Office has announced the opening of a second counter after revealing the business is coping well following the closure of the area’s final bank branch.
The town’s postmistress had been concerned about a potential increase in demand after the Bank of Scotland branch in Poltalloch Street closed on June 22.
However, postmistress Anna Dudziak told the Advertiser the transition had fared better than expected, with only a minor increase in demand.
Following the successful installation of a new service counter, Anna has now taken on a new member of staff, who will operate the position on Mondays and Fridays — the post office’s busiest days of the week.
Anna said: "To be honest, I can’t see any difference. Just maybe a few more transactions a day, but everyone seems to be coping quite well with it.
"It’s a lot more people are asking for change and to deposit money, but apart from that I can’t say it’s really bad or really busy because of them.
"I was really worried, but I can’t see much difference, to be honest."
The postmistress was keen to highlight that the majority of the seven weeks since the bank’s closure had been during the school holidays, insisting the business could experience higher demand when children return to the classroom.
Installing a new counter had been a long-term ambition for the business, with Anna saying it would allow the operation to run more efficiently during busy periods such as Christmas.
Anna originally had her application for an additional service point in her shop rejected by Post Office Ltd last year due to the Lochgilphead site’s customer numbers.
Anna told the Advertiser she was "pleased" the new installation had been approved.
The post office was one of the key factors included in an assessment conducted by LINK to determine alternatives for access to cash before the bank’s closure.
Councillors, concerned residents and businesses were highly critical of Lloyds Banking Group’s decision to close the branch at the time.
