New principal appointed to lead UHI Argyll
A new principal has been appointed to lead UHI Argyll ahead of the retirement of its current head later this year.
Nathan Tyler will take up the post on October 19, succeeding Joe Wright, who is due to retire at the end of 2026 following a planned transition period.
Mr Tyler joins the college from West College Scotland, where he is director of student experience, communications and engagement.
He is no stranger to UHI Argyll, having recently served on the college’s board of management, where he gained an insight into the opportunities and challenges of delivering education across Argyll and Bute.
Originally from the Highlands, he graduated from the University of Glasgow and began his career in journalism, working for Reuters, Sky News and STV, before moving into senior strategic communications and leadership roles. He has been a member of the senior leadership team at West College Scotland since 2021.
Speaking about his appointment, Mr Tyler said: “I am delighted and privileged to be joining UHI Argyll at such an important time. It is a college with a real sense of purpose and ambition – playing a vital role in supporting communities and widening access to lifelong learning across the region.
“I’m very much looking forward to working collaboratively with staff, students and partners to build on that success.”
Maggie Tierney, chair of UHI Argyll’s board of management, said: “Nathan brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to collaboration, innovation and student success. His appointment, alongside a carefully planned transition, ensures stability and continuity for the college and its communities.”
She also paid tribute to Mr Wright as he prepares to retire, saying: “Joe has led UHI Argyll through a particularly challenging period for the Scottish Further and Higher Education sector.
“His intelligent and insightful leadership, combined with his calm, measured and focused approach, has been deeply valued by the board and staff alike. He leaves a strong and positive legacy, and while he will be greatly missed, we wish him every success and happiness in his retirement.”
During his first weeks in the role, Mr Tyler will visit UHI Argyll learning centres across Argyll and Bute to meet staff, students and partners across the UHI network.
