Lamlash ended their campaign on a high note and finished Arran’s football season by winning the Copperwheat Knockout Cup.
The fiercely fought final of the Copperwheat Knockout Cup was played against Brodick at Ormidale Park in Brodick.
Lamlash took an early lead in the first five minutes of the game thanks to a fantastic goal by Jack Hird. Unfortunately, an altercation broke out shortly after the goal, resulting in a Lamlash player being awarded a red card, and leaving the team with just 10 men.
Trying to capitalise on the change of formation for Lamlash, Brodick increased the pressure but could not break the team’s cohesion or force them into making an error.
Lamlash had a few more chances at the Brodick goal through set pieces but they either hit the goalpost or were thwarted at the goalmouth. At half-time the match ended with a scoreline of 0-1 to Lamlash.
The second half started off with renewed tensions from both sides as Lamlash tried to defend their lead, and Brodick desperate to equalise the score. Both teams had potential goal scoring chances, however, Brodick players started to rack up a few injuries and substitutions where made which changed the dynamic of the game.
With both teams fighting valiantly to not concede any goals, Lamlash found themselves two goals up after Charlie Ross scored from 25 yards out with just 15 minutes to go. Lamlash put everything they had into keeping a clean sheet and were rewarded by winning the game 2-0. Dylan Smith, Lamlash centre back, was named as the man of the match.
At the end of the game, sponsor John Copperwheat presented Lamlash with the Copperwheat Knockout Cup and provided the team with post match refreshments. On behalf of Arran Football Association, organiser Sean “Higgy” Higgins thanked John Copperwheat for his continued support of the Arran Football Association.
