Soggy fun day at Tayvallich Regatta
It was the perfect weather for ducks last weekend, which was ideal for much of the fun and games at Saturday’s Tayvallich Regatta.
The annual Duck Hunt was one of the many highlights with competitors challenged to collect as many as possible by whatever means or vessel.
Other action on the water included rowing races, blindfold rowing, a SUP race and a kayak race, followed by one of the most hotly anticipated events of the day — the raft race.
“The damp weather certainly didn’t put people off,” sailing club stalwart Jilly Wilson told the Advertiser. “There was a fantastic turnout for races and activities, with something for sailors and non-sailors of all ages.
“There was a brilliant turnout for the raft race, with some impressively inventive and, in some cases, highly optimistic homemade rafts taking to the water.”
This year’s regatta also provided an opportunity to remember an important figure in the sailing club’s history.
John Grafton, who sadly passed away earlier this year, was Commodore of Tayvallich Sailing Club for 21 years, from 1978 to 1999, and was instrumental in reviving the regatta during his time at the helm.
On Saturday current Commodore Charlie Silverton paid tribute to John, and the club’s keelboat trophy has now been rededicated as The John Grafton Trophy, ensuring that his contribution to the club and to the regatta will continue to be remembered.
Charlie also spoke about the club’s future and plans to reinvigorate the membership by welcoming a wider range of on-the-water activities and sports.
“There is even the possibility of a new name for the club to better reflect its wider ambition,” Jilly added. “All ideas and suggestions are very welcome; this could be the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the club.”
