Island author and geo-poet Norman Bissell and artist Lottie May were awarded residencies from CHARTS with funding from Creative Scotland to run a series of Expressing An Island workshops encouraging people to showcase their coastal communities.
CHARTS is a cultural, heritage and arts networking group across Argyll and the Isles. With its support, both Norman, who is also director of the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics, and Lottie have plans to take their workshops to Kerrera, Easdale and Lismore.
"It's already taking wings. Two people from the last writing workshop went off and are setting up a writing group on Seil. We're building support for these events with a view to publishing a journal 'Stravaig' next year featuring the workshops," said Norman.
Lottie May's next print workshop is Seaweed Cyanotype at Cullipool Village Hall on Sunday August 13.
Last month, textile artist Deborah Gray also led a workshop on Luing via CHARTS making purses and needle cases from a unique piece of fabric stemming from the Celtic Colours Exhibition at The Rockfield Centre in Oban.
The felted fabric used was dyed with plants from the recent Alphabet Trees project, part of the Celtic Colours exhibition that was given on loan to go on display upstairs at the Atlantic Islands Centre.
Five Luing residents took part in the making of those Rockfield projects so it was "a fitting full circle" that Deborah visited the island with her workshop said Mary Whitmore from Luing Community Trust who has been driving creative activities and opportunities ahead on Luing.
As part of CHARTS Coastal Cultures, Islands work it has commissioned two other artist-led residencies also funded by Creative Scotland:
On Tiree, filmmaker Jack Lockhart and collaborators are developing a project called Between the Tides in collaboration with Screen Argyll.
And on Mull, a collective made up of Alice Stillman, Alasdair Whyte and Rhona Dougall are developing Feàrna - Gaelic for alder - a project using a mapping process for their work also involving the wider community on their island.
