A court has heard how a 20-year-old man was “absolutely mortified” by his drunken behaviour towards two police officers.
Lochlain Ellis, of Millknowe, admitted threatening or abusive behaviour in Burnside Square in the town and also while being taken by van to the police station by repeatedly shouting, swearing and uttering offensive remarks.
He had come to the attention of police officers on patrol on August 6 last year, said Raeesa Ahmed, procurator fiscal depute.
She said: “He was visibly struggling and officers were trying to help him, but he began to shout and swear.
“They tried to engage him in conversation to calm him down but he continued to shout and swear. He was arrested and his behaviour did not desist.”
Defence agent Derek Buchanan said that his client was a young man who was “absolutely mortified by his behaviour” and expressed his extreme regret and apologised.
Sheriff Euan Cameron handed down a community payback order and 72 hours of unpaid work to be completed within six months.
He added: “The police attended to help and what they got for their efforts was a barrage of abuse."
