Last Saturday was the first time in a long season that Mid Argyll’s senior men did not have enough players to field a team, writes Lee Buckley.
With work commitments, injuries and illness it was disappointing to have to postpone the fixture away to Lanark.
But this did not stop Mid Argyll players from being involved in rugby throughout the region.
On Saturday Vinnie Buckley and Murray MacDonald played for Oban U18 boys in the West Region Quaich final against Helensburgh in Oban.
The game was a very competitive fixture with both teams playing fast, hard-hitting rugby.
The teams were very well matched and after Helensburgh scored first, Oban were soon level with a try from Archie Campbell and a conversion from Murray.
The rest of Oban’s points were scored by Murray, a try, a conversion and then a penalty to win the game, when Helensburgh were leading 14 points to 15.
The half back combination of Vinnie at 9 and Murray at 10, was pivotal in the success on the day, but it was a real team effort, with huge defensive sets and quick attacking moves. The whole team thoroughly deserved the win. Final score 17-15.
This was the final game at Oban U18s for coach Lee Buckley and Murray, but Vinnie will go between the U18s and Mid Argyll senior team next year until he steps up to senior rugby full time.
On Sunday, Arran Martin was a Mid Argyll representative in the Oban U16 boys team that shared the U16 regional Quaich with Helensburgh after the game finished 17-17.
And rounding the weekend off, playing for Oban Ladies, were Drew Buckley and Tilly Cunningham. They were playing away to Greenock and in a very tight game they lost out narrowly to a very good and experienced team.
Final score Greenock 39-Oban 33.
