An observational documentary series following the lives of the islanders on Tiree will be broadcast on BBC ALBA from Tuesday July 7 at 8.30pm.
Na Tiristich - From Tiree with Love - was filmed over a six-month period, from June to December, last year by independent Glasgow-based TV production company Corcadal Productions, headed up by Christine Morrison.
Christine set up Corcadal 12 years ago and has been working in television production for the past 27 years. Working with a small team the company have managed to capture what it’s like to live and work on the island.
'We all really enjoyed spending time on Tiree and getting to know our contributors on our many visits to the island,' said Christine.
The series itself was filmed by a small crew of two - Christine as producer, director and sound recordist, working with three different freelance cameramen who, she said were 'all excellent' - Alasdair Maclean from Inverness, Paul Riley (Killearn) and Phil Gurney (Linlithgow).
Programme one features Rhoda Meek, who moved to Tiree several years ago. Rhoda’s Dad comes from Tiree and Rhoda has renovated the house her dad grew up in on the island. With no crofting experience prior to moving to the island, Rhoda now has Hebridean sheep and is training a collie dog, Gunna. There is also an insight into Fèis Thiriodh, the annual music tuition festival for children, and an meeting with William Maclean who runs a watersports business on the island. The crew also meet father and son Alastair and Iain MacInnes who are keen and active crofters.
Programme two sees the islanders prepare for the busiest weekend of the year - the 10th Tiree Music Festival - with festival director Stewart Maclennan and others from team TMF. Rhoda, Alastair and Iain are busy preparing for another big community event, the Tiree Cattle Show, and the traditional dipping lug sail boats take part in the annual regatta at Gott Bay.
Programme three has more from the Tiree Music Festival. Gordon Connell, who has been teaching accordion on the island for 50 years, features along with Stewart Maclennan and Skerryvore's Daniel Gillespie. The team also meet young Tiree musicians and entrepreneurs Ian Smith and Alain Campbell (from Trail West) who have set up Tyree Gin. Rhoda, Alastair and Iain take their lambs to the sale and there's a visit the watersports club for children.
The Tiree Wave Classic features in episode four. William Maclean organises the event and he and his family love it. A visit to the island of Lunga with Frazer and Donnie Macinnes from Tiree Sea Tours also plays a part in the final instalment.
Na Tiristich is the fourth island-based observational documentary series Corcadal have made for BBC ALBA. Previous series were made in Harris, Uist and Skye.
