Oban Lorne 22
Ardrossan Accies 36
West Division 1
Under bright sunshine at Glencruitten, the match between Oban Lorne and unbeaten Ardrossan kicked off with both teams displaying solid structures and tactical gameplay from the start.
Only a win for Oban and two bonus point wins from the last two games of the season could see them finish second in the league ahead of Lenzie.
Oban struck first through Calum MacLachlan, who received a switch pass from captain Vas just three metres from the line and bulldozed over to score near the posts. Finlay Carmichael converted the try.
With excellent team play and strategic kicks from their number 10, Ardrossan consistently pushed Oban deep into their own half. Their efforts were rewarded with a penalty try following a collapsed maul near the try line.
Oban weren’t without their moments, methodically working their way up the field and narrowing the score with a penalty kick from Carmichael.
However, Ardrossan’s precision inside the Oban 22 led to two more tries before the break.
Oban’s player/coach Corrie Lowe kept the game within reach by scoring a crucial try in the corner.
The second half mirrored the first in intensity, with neither team yielding easily.
Around the 55-minute mark, Ardrossan displayed their championship mettle by turning over the ball and launching a long kick that sent Oban retreating to their 22.
This set up a pivotal try from man of the match Adam Monaghan, who feinted a pass from the scrum half position to score under the posts.
This seemed to be the momentum swing, with Ardrossan’s maintained pressure adding another try, seemingly sealing the game.
But as the match drew to a close, Oban had the final say when Craig Wright countered an Ardrossan attack and raced from his own half to score an exhilarating try.
The crowd playfully shouted “last try wins” acknowledging the effort and the spirit of the game.
Oban are now looking forward to their final home game of the season on Saturday against Strathaven, who have this one last match in their relegation fight, and will be looking to win at Glencruitten to give them a chance of staying up in West 1. Kick-off 3pm.
