Swimmers hoping to take part in this year’s Lamlash Splash event will need to be fast to secure one of the 10 places reserved for locals.
Entries open on Saturday, with hopefuls needing to request an entry form from organiser Ann Hart at anngartconner@yahoo.co.uk
The popular event only has 40 places available and will see swimmers make the 1.3 mile trip from the Holy Isle to Lamlash Pier on September 21.
Last year, all 40 places were snapped up within 36 hours so Ann is urging anyone interested to get their entry form and payment submitted now to guarantee a place.
She said: “If last year is anything to go by - when all 40 places were taken within 36 hours - everyone will need to be quick off the blocks. Previous participants will be sent a form on Saturday, however, a place isn’t guaranteed until both the entry form and payment are received and confirmed.
“Entrants should be able to swim 2.2 km non-stop in the pool, preferably in front crawl. It would be advisable to do some training in the sea over the months leading up to the event. Open water swimming is a completely different experience to swimming in a pool with the sea temperature, buoyancy, wind, waves and current to contend with.”
The Lamlash Splash requires a large number of volunteers to run the event safely. Assistance is provided by the emergency services, the Kayak Club and the Sailing Club, as well as members of the public. If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, please contact Ann by email.
Open water swimming sessions are held in Brodick and Lamlash all year round and further information about group swimming sessions can be found on the Arran Open Water Swimmers Facebook page. Ann can also be contacted if you wish to join the group or take part in regular sessions.
