In their final away league match of the season, Oban Saints 2010s took on in-form Third Lanark and returned home with a well-deserved 2-6 win under their belts.
Third Lanark found themselves under pressure early on as Saints created a number of reasonable chances.
However, it was Third Lanark who drew first blood, capitalising on a dangerous cross that tested the reflexes of goalkeeper Finlay Milton, but the Third Lanark striker volleyed the ball into the net to give the home side the lead.
Saints’ response was swift and decisive. Leon MacLean spearheaded the comeback, demonstrating his blistering pace down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross to Cairon MacNab, who slammed the ball home.
Minutes later, MacNab turned provider, delivering a cross for the returning Lyam Fox, who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net.
The onslaught continued as Fox deftly redirected the ball to Dylan Ross at the far post, extending Saints’ lead further.
Despite Lanark’s efforts to re-group, Saints remained relentless in their pursuit of goals.
Fox found himself clear on goal, only to be blocked by the home keeper, but Ross pounced on the rebound to score. And Leon MacLean gave Saints a commanding 5-1 lead at half time when he raced past three defenders before firing the ball home from 18 yards..
The second half was a more stop-start affair, with both teams battling for control in midfield.
Lanark pulled a goal back, momentarily threatening Saints’ dominance, however, the visitors swiftly reasserted their authority, with Ross once again playing a pivotal role in setting up MacLean, who calmly finished to ensure three points were heading back to Oban.
With the league title still within reach, Saints turn their attention to their upcoming clash against EKFC Blue this Sunday at Oban High School, kick-off 1.15pm - the start of a crucial run of eight home games to conclude the season.
With the race for the title hotting up, Saints are counting on vociferous support from their home fans as they aim to finish the season on a high note.
