Arran Bird recorder Jim Cassels was an invited guest at the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club (SOC) and the British Trust for Ornithology in Scotland’s Scottish birdwatchers’ conference.
Jim delivered an illustrated presentation on Arran’s bird life at SOC’s Ayrshire branch at Troon Concert and Walker Halls, South Beach, Troon.
More than 150 people from across the region attended the conference which takes place each spring.
In his illustrated presentation, Jim drew on his experience as bird recorder on Arran to look at factors influencing the bird life on Arran. These included location, habitats, the annual cycle, changes over time and the influence of humans.
The latest annual bird report book was also promoted and participants were encouraged to visit Arran, which Jim describes as “a special place with special birds”.
Jim has been bird recorder for Isle of Arran Natural History Society since 2006. He has been responsible for the annual bird report for the last 18 years, contributing to the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club Clyde and Clyde Island Report.
He is also the British Trust for Ornithology’s regional representative on Arran and was regional organiser for the Bird Atlas 2007 to 2011.
With financial support from SOC and the Arran Trust, the publication, Arran Bird Atlas 2007-2012: Mapping the breeding and wintering birds of Arran, was produced.
It was given an honourable mention when British Birds announced the awards for best local bird atlas 2007-2017.
Jim was the winner of the Marsh Award for local ornithology in 2013 and is the author of decades worth of regular Bird Notes featured in the Arran Banner.
