Pitch-perfect harmonies rang out from New Connections on Saturday when Music Shed Community Choir hosted a singing workshop to mark Earth Day.
People came together from across Lochaber to sing about trees, birds, grains of sand, living gently on the earth, slowing the pace of life and the urgent need for climate and ecological action.
“Earth Day has been marked every year on April 22 since 1970 to demonstrate support for environmental protection and events involve one billion people in nearly 200 countries," explained Mandy Ketchin, Music Shed’s song leader.
“The need for it is greater than ever this year, with the effects of the man-made climate crisis already being felt worldwide.
“Sing for Earth Day’ inspires groups in communities across the country to share love and concern for nature through song. It really felt like we were taking part in something much larger than our own local event.
“It was lovely to be singing in the space next to the Repair Café and great to see the amazing work they were doing there, all helping to keep things in active use rather than going to landfill.
“Huge thanks to them for sharing their space with us and to New Connections for letting us use their great venue.”
Music Shed Community Choir sing on most Tuesday nights at St Andrew’s Hall, Bank Street, Fort William. It is open to anyone who loves to sing, with a variety of music on offer in a relaxed environment. No musical experience necessary.
The choir hopes to run another singing event during the Climate Festival in September and is planning a pop-up street choir in August to raise funds to mark the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution this year. For more information email mandyketchin@naturalvoice.net.
