Arran Horticultural Society’s annual Spring Flower and Bulb Show attracted a large number of entries despite an incredibly wet start to spring.
The array of cut flowers, potted plants and floral displays ensured that green-fingered enthusiasts flocked to Brodick hall where they enjoyed the exhibits and a cup of tea and home-baking with friends.
In addition to all the beautiful blooms and pampered spring bulbs were floral-themed paintings and drawings from children, along with miniature gardens, Easter bonnets and other creative floral arrangements.
Following the show, a prizegiving was held where historic trophies were presented to the winners of the six categories: potted bulbs; cut flowers; floral art; miscellaneous; children’s entries and photography.
A new trophy, the Colin Totty Trophy for best daffodil in show, was introduced this year in memory of Colin Totty, who was the secretary and an active participant at the society’s two annual shows.
Val Lenthall, Colin’s mother-in-law, presented the trophies.
Frances Wheeler received the inaugural Colin Totty Trophy while Sam Goronwy won the Royal Bank of Scotland Trophy for the best exhibit in show. Sam also won the Neil McLean Trophy for the best exhibit in the children’s section.
Margaret Bryce won the RW McKelvie Cup for the best exhibit in the potted bulb category.
Astrid Hamade won the Arran Horticultural Society Trophy for the best photograph and Whiting Bay Primary School won the Brodick Gardens Trophy for gaining the most points in the children’s categories.
The next event in the society’s calendar will be the Summer Show in Arran High School in August.
The Summer Show includes 10 sections with more than 200 categories, including handicrafts and baking.
The show is one of the largest exhibitions on Arran and has been in existence in its present form since 1908.
