Ladies of Shiskine WI were treated to an interesting talk and slide show on the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) at their February meeting.
The ACWW was founded in 1929 to bring together rural women of the world to address the ‘challenges they faced as a result of isolation of their communities, discrimination against them and their lack of standing in political processes’.
At the time of its inception, the aims of the founders of the ACWW - Madge Watt, Lady Aberdeen and Elsie Zimmer - were to promote the voices of rural women.
In the 21st century, the aims are now to amplify the voices of rural woman and to connect, mobilise and empower them.
Three Shiskine WI members, Evelyn Hamilton, Angela Cassels and Alison Burnett, travelled to Kuala Lumpur last year to attend the ACWW triennial conference.
Angela is the current ACWW treasurer and Alison was a past treasurer. This is quite an achievement for Arran and their enthusiasm shone through at the February meeting.
Following supper, competition and exhibition winners were announced: Best use of 4oz of rice: 1 Joan Stewart; 2 Esther Henderson. Favourite scarf: 1 Wilma Robertson; 2 Joan Stewart; 3 Jenni Turnbull.
The next WI meeting is a members’ night and the AGM on Wednesday March 6 at 7.30pm in Shiskine Hall. Everyone is reminded to bring their completed voting sheets.
The final competition for the 2023-24 session is three identical decorated cupcakes and the exhibition is a favourite jug.
