A motorist was £450 for his first driving offence - at the age of 82.
Robert Mitchell, of Knockaruan Way in Campbeltown, collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the town’s Tesco car park. The incident was captured on the store’s CCTV, which was shown to the court.
The pensioner admitted driving without due care, attention and consideration for other road users by failing to keep a proper lookout and observe a woman on the marked pedestrian walkway in the car park, failing to adhere to the road markings and colliding with the woman on the walkway.
Mr Mitchell was not present in court but represented by defence agent Stephen MacSporran.
Procurator fiscal depute Raeesa Ahmed said Mr Mitchell was driving into the Tesco entrance and misjudged the turn. His vehicle went “onto the pedestrian walk-way lines on the car park and the car connected with the pedestrian on the side of her body”.
The incident happened on February 3 last year.
Ms Ahmed added: “She was uninjured and the accused continued to drive as if unaware of what had happened. He was confronted by the woman and another person who had witnessed the incident.”
Mr MacSporran said his client had a momentary lapse of concentration.
He added: “Fortunately, this lady was not injured. My client had taken his eye off the ball to check if there was a space in the disabled drivers’ bay.
“This is Mr Mitchell’s first offence and there is nothing on his licence. This was a simple lapse of concentration and he is very thankful that no-one was hurt.”
Sheriff Euan Cameron fined Mitchell £450 plus a victim surcharge. He also added seven penalty points to Mitchell’s licence.
He said: “This must have been very frightening at the time for the woman involved."
