Lundavra Primary School pupils enjoyed the company of some very special senior guests recently as part of Care Lochaber’s Intergenerational project.
The community care charity had received £9822 from the Communities Health and Wellbeing Fund which is distributed through the Highland Third Sector Interface based in Inverness.
Charity manager Allison Kane explained: "We have decided this year to focus on Intergenerational Days, involving children from local schools and groups.
"Care Lochaber already have a large database of elderly people from the community who regularly attend our monthly events, but we are hoping to increase the numbers."
The first Intergenerational day was held in Lundavra School where guests were treated to some songs and poems from the P7 pupils.
Tea and cake was then served before the children showed their guests the trophies that they had won for singing. Pupils then mixed and mingled with everyone.
Some of the group were then given a tour of the school which they absolutely loved. One lady said that “it brought me back to my youth”.
Another group of children showed some of the ladies their fantastic gym hall where Bessy Taylor was passed a basketball from one of the children and she bounced it a few times and got it straight into the hoop.
Allison added: "There are many benefits of good contact between old and young which include better attitudes towards older people, less stereotyping, and less anxiety about ageing.
"They include improved learning and social development for young children, and better care and quality of life for older people."
Care Lochaber is hoping to have an Intergenerational Day once a month and are asking any groups involving children that might want to get involved, to get in touch with either Allison or Laura on 01397 701222.
