Cancer support charity Maggie’s is offering islanders a 50 per cent discount on its registration fee in an effort to encourage them to take part in the Arran Challenge.
The two-day fundraising event will take place over the weekend of May 4 and 5 and will involve a 56-mile cycle around the island and an ascent of Goatfell.
The reduction in the registration fee is due to it not covering ferry and accommodation costs for those living on the island.
A Maggie’s spokesperson told the Arran Banner: “We have been delighted with the reception from many Arran residents about our challenge event.
“We’ve decided to offer Arran residents a 50 per cent discount on registration for the challenge. They will not have accommodation or travel costs, so their registration covers the marshalling and event logistics/back-up as well as meals, including the evening meal on Saturday night.
“We would still be asking them to reach a sponsorship target of £500 which will help us support people affected by cancer across the west of Scotland.
“We can’t think of a better way to enhance the challenge than to open this up at a reduced price to the island population. We are picturing the scene where Arran cyclists/walkers are meeting and greeting those from the mainland at Brodick to kick-start their challenge.”
For more information about the Arran Challenge, contact the fundraising team at glasgowfundraising@maggies.org or call them on 0141 330 9792. If you are an Arran resident, organisers will provide you with a code which will entitle you to the discount.
