In 2014 Oban Rotary Club joined forces with other Rotary Clubs across the world to raise funds for a fleet of eRanger Motorcycle Ambulances that are stationed in Mbale, Uganda.
In a periodic update, the club recently learned of the huge, ongoing, impact the eRangers have on the delivery of healthcare, especially emergency maternity healthcare in the Mbale region of eastern Uganda.
Of the 32 eRangers that were sent in 2014 there are complete statistics for 26 of them, up to December 2023. They have completed a total of 43,878 emergency call-outs, 54 per cent being for emergencies arising during pregnancy and labour. It is estimated that up to 20,000 of the total number will have been lifesaving.
The Rotary Club of Oban eRanger is stationed at Lwangoli Health Centre III, in the Mbale District of Mbale region. Between June 2014 and December 2023 the Oban Rotary eRanger has been called out more than 2,070 times. With 1,312 being for pregnancy emergencies and 765 for emergencies mainly for children under five years old.
Roger Neuberg, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, and chairperson of the International Service Committee, Rotary Club of Oadby, who spearheaded the initial campaign and sent Oban Rotary the statistics, stated: “The probability is that up to 1,000 of these callouts will have been lifesaving. It’s breath-taking.
"For a Rotary Club to save a single life would be truly newsworthy. To save lives in these numbers is almost beyond comprehension. For the 1,312 women who have survived an otherwise hazardous and life-threatening pregnancy, the Rotary Club of Oban have provided real hope for a future with their children.”
