For the past eight years I have greatly enjoyed my little car, writes Reverend Joyce Watson.
Following a minor brush with a delivery van the side was repaired and the whole car re-sprayed. It looked as good as new!
So I was surprised and shocked when it recently failed the MOT.
It looked good, was running smoothly, and had a low mileage. However, it stays outside, constantly exposed to the salt-laden winds off the sea. The corrosion underneath was so bad that the verdict was “get a new car, this one is only of use for parts”.
Now, this being still the season of Lent, a time of self examination (of more use than giving up chocolate!), the verdict on the state of my car reminded me of a verse in Psalm 19 verse 12: “Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults”.
So I have been asking God to reveal to me my hidden faults.
Like most of us, I have not done anything downright evil, but have become aware of more subtle things, such as apathy, negative thoughts, people pleasing and so on.
Like my car, we may look good on the outside, but just like a mechanic sees what is hidden from view, God sees the hidden parts of me.
I am grateful to have been made aware of things I need to work on and with the help of God, who I believe is perfect love, to become more the person I was created to be.
Lent will soon be over and the joy of Easter is ahead. If Jesus could rise from the dead, then anything is possible!
