Arran Ladies hockey team welcomed the Uddingston IVs ladies for a return match at Ormidale astroturf.
Captain Lynda Fenton led a full squad, plus a substitute, onto the pitch knowing it was going to be a tough match with Uddingston looking to win this time round.
Suzi Haddow returned as goalkeeper, with Cat Galbraith as sweeper, Lee Reid as centre back and Anne Watts, Marie Craig and Karen McGrath on the defensive line.
Lynda was joined in midfield by Susie Murchie on the left and Mia Walker on the right. Coach Lorraine Hewie was back as attacking left wing, with Del Jones in centre attack and Jenna Cook as the attacking right wing.
As Uddingston had been unable to provide their own umpire, Pauline Reid and Paul Hewie, a senior club player who is training for this umpire’s badge, umpired the game.
Winning the toss, the Uddingston captain chose first pass back and the game began.
Showing skilful passing and swift sprinting, the visitors tried to reach the Arran goal but were relieved of the ball with fine block tackles from Lydna, superb steals from Susie and great running interceptions from Mia. They all shot the ball towards the waiting forwards.
Throughout the game, Lorraine displayed her repertoire of goal shots including a reverse stick flick, a strike and a drag and spin hit.
Del had chances to score, having beaten two or three players from the halfway line to reach the top of the ’D’, only to have her shots at goal thwarted by the Uddingston keeper.
Jenna’s sprints up the right wing and rocket shots into the ’D’ made for great viewing for the home team supporters.
On the occasions Uddingston passed through midfield, they were met with a formidable defensive line.
Lee played high up the pitch, closing down challenges, and Anne, Marie and Karen took care of any attempts coming down the side lines, swiftly sending the ball back into midfield.
Cat Galbraith swept the ball away from Arran’s goal whenever the visitors’ attacking forwards made it into the ’D’.
Suzi Haddow shut down any shots that came her way and calmly fired the ball back upfield.
Despite all efforts, neither team scored and the score was 0-0 at the final whistle.
The teams thanked Pauline and Paul for umpiring the game and Uddingston nominated Del Jones as player of the match for her excellent attacking play.
Susie Murchie received dame of the game from her teammates for her defending, creating passing opportunities from midfield and taking shots at goal.
Arran have a couple of weeks off over the Easter break but are away to play Giffnock on Saturday April 13.
Supporters who can go along to Eastwood High School, Newton Mearns, for the 2pm push back will be welcomed.
