Arran Ladies 6
GHK VIs 0
West District League
Arran Ladies hockey team played their final competitive game of the season at home to Glasgow High Kelvinside VIs at the Ormidale pavilion pitch at the weekend.
Captain Lynda Fenton returned to lead her team from midfield, with Jenny Crockett and Susie Murchie as her left and right mids.
Team coach Lorraine Hewie was unable to play after being injured in last week’s game and Mia Walker took up the position of attacking left forward. Del Jones was centre forward and Jenna Cook was right forward. Suzi Haddow was in goals, with Cat Galbraith as sweeper, Marie Craig left defensive back, Helen Thomson right back and Anne Watts centre back.
From the first whistle, the game was in favour of the home team. Six goals over the four quarters showed the skills, strengths and determination of the Arran ladies.
They brought everything they had to the final game of a long winter season with Jenna scoring Arran’s first goal in the first five minutes of the game.
Just before the end of the quarter, Mia passed a superb ball to Del in the shooting “D” who shot the ball past the goalkeeper to give Arran a 2-0 lead. Del also scored the third goal at the end of the third quarter from a well-played short corner penalty.
GHK players displayed their abilities, especially in mid-field, as they tried to find a way into the Arran goal area but were turned back at every challenge.
Anne Watts repelled all efforts coming down the central channel, with Marie and Helen dealing with any sideline attempts. Cat Galbraith deomonstrated her defensive skills with clearances from the “D” and an impressive aerial lift which sent the ball over the heads of the GHK attackers and on to the sticks of the Arran mid-field players who sent the ball swiftly up the pitch.
Lynda, Jenny and Susie worked hard to turn over and win back the ball in mid-field so they could give the attacking forwards a chance to put pressure on the opposition’s defence.
The GHK goalkeeper did an outstanding job saving goal shots and was awarded player of the match by the Arran team for her great skill.
The final quarter saw the battle for possession continue but Arran capitalised when Del and Mia combined for a fine move. Del flicked the ball past the defence, drew the keeper off her goal line and gave Mia a great chance to score and increase Arran’s lead.
Del’s spirited run from the halfway line into the “D” was rewarded shortly afterwards when she hit her shot to get her hat-trick.
The last goal of the game came in the final seconds when Jenny found the smallest of spaces to slot the ball past the keeper from a short corner penalty making the score 6-0 to Arran.
The visitors nominated Anne Watts as the player of the match for her great defensive work and Jenna Cook was nominated dame of the game by her teammates for her superb attacking play.
Thanks went to Pauline Reid and visiting umpire Terry Templeton for officiating the match.
Arran Ladies will now take a break from West District League matches but will still be training throughout the summer.
Anyone wishing to join is welcome to go along to the Ormidale pavilion pitch on Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm.
