The Mid Argyll Ladies team travelled to Glasgow at the weekend to join up with Waysiders Drumpellier and take on the Lugi Lions from Lund in Sweden.
This was only the second outing for the ladies and it would be a tougher test playing a well-established and experienced touring team boasting a Swedish international player in their ranks.
The weather was atrocious with driving wind and rain, and as the ladies played after the W/D men had faced the Lugi men’s team, the pitch became a mud-bath.
As it was a friendly, the game went ahead with both teams desperate to get on with it.
The contest started well for the home team as they put pressure on the visitors from kick off.
It soon showed what a well-drilled team the Swedes were though as they scored the opening try of the game followed by a conversion. They were organised and experienced and soon had their second.
Despite a very tough game with both teams making hard tackles and powerful runs, Lugi had the upper hand as they ran in two more tries before half time.
Despite this, the MA/WD team didn’t lose heart or give up. They went out for the second half determined to show they could play good rugby also.
The weather was really letting them down though and as the rain continued to pour it made playing conditions very difficult.
The visitors adapted better and again the greater experience showed through as they ran in four more tries in the second half.
The game finished 0 – 48, but this did not reflect the effort the home players put into the game, and they should take real pride from putting up a great effort against such an established team.
Two players from each team were picked for a back and a forward of the match, and it was two Boars that got the plaudits for MA/WD. Drew Buckley was Back of the match playing at fly half and Anya Gritten was Forward of the match playing at flanker.
Massive congratulations to them and to the rest of the players that made the trip.
This was a great experience for everyone involved and offers more experience to draw on for the games to come. This is all building to a very bright future for women’s and girls’ rugby in Mid Argyll.
The occasion was all part of Waysiders Drumpellier RFC’s anniversary celebrations marking the amalgamation of the two clubs 30 years ago.
The hospitality afterwards was first class as everyone was made to feel very welcome and part of the festivities. Everyone at Mid Argyll would like to congratulate them on reaching this landmark.
