This year’s Ormidale 10k attracted a good entry of local and mainland runners who made the most of perfect weather conditions to compete in the annual event organised by Arran Runners.
A total of 62 runners set off at midday on Sunday to tackle the officially measured course from Ormidale Pavilion out to Merkland Point and back, with a deviation up and down the Knowe road to make the distance exact.
Spectators, friends and family members lined the route to cheer on participants as they enjoyed the relatively flat route offered by the Scottish Athletics sanctioned race.
The first runner to cross the finish line with a record time of 31 minutes and 33 seconds was Gregor Yates from Inverclyde AC running club. Gregor is a well-known runner in the west of Scotland and in March this year posted a time of 2h 21m 17seconds in the Tokyo Marathon.
The first female over the line was Elaine Eadie, from Edinburgh AC running club, who completed the race in an impressive 39 minutes and 43 seconds. Elaine has competed in the Ormidale 10k every year since 2017.
There was a good turnout of 26 local runners. The first local home was John Mulholland of Kilmory, who finished 11th overall in 41m 20s.
First local lady home was Kirstie Smith of Lamlash in 49m 36s. Kirsty is renowned locally as a hill runner. Her brother Jon recently won the Clauchland Hills Twilight race. Mike Mellor, of Arran Runners, and Elaine Sargent, Lamlash, featured in the veteran’s honours.
Ormidale 10k organiser Tommy Gilmore said: “Congratulations to everyone who took part in the race, Arran Runners which organised the race, Brodick Improvement Association which arranged marshals and everyone else who helped make the race a success. Full results are available on Arran Runners Facebook site.”
The top three in male and female categories were: Men: 1 Gregor Yates, 31m 33s, Inverclyde AC; 2 Darroch Anderson, 33m 35s, Carnethy Hill Racing Club; 3 Jonathan Manning, 33m 42s, unafilliated.

In addition to the Ormidale 10k race, Arran Runners also organise and host the Brodick to Glencloy race, the Lamlash Forest Trail race and the Whiting Bay Forest Trail race, along with other fun events including the Clauchland Hills Twilight race which took place in March.
The next race is the Whiting Bay Forest Trail race on Sunday June 2. Entry to this five-mile trail race, easily accessible by day-trippers by ferry and bus, is available on SiEntries.
