Much preferring to share news than to be the news, the Arran Banner’s 50th anniversary is more about marking a historic milestone than blowing our own trumpet.
Documenting historic happenings and being a voice for the island is something we are committed to and are passionate about providing.
The secret to 50 years of success lies not just with a succession of good editors at the helm, but also the widespread support of the community.
Islanders love to keep their local newspaper informed of local happenings and events and they like to invite us to visit their businesses and attend the functions they offer. In modern parlance, our readers engage with us, and that is what has helped to ensure our longevity.
The words on the front page of issue number one, from March 1974, said: “The Arran Banner is yours. If you want it to succeed, it can. But if you don’t support it, the paper will die.”
Thankfully, you have supported it, and continue to do so, and for this we are extremely grateful and offer our sincere thanks.
Here’s to the next 50 years of Arran having its own local newspaper which is dedicated to serving the Arran community.
