Skye Camanachd 6
Inverness 1
Last year’s MacTavish Cup runners-up Skye Camanachd reached the semi-final stage with a win over Inverness at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
Skye suffered an injury blow ahead of the game when skipper John Gillies was ruled out for at least four weeks after suffering a broken thumb in the previous week’s win over Lochaber.
Ross MacKinnon and Kenny Cushnie both returned, whilst there was a debut start for 15-year-old Iain MacInnes, a former under-14 national player of the year. Ryan Harrison and Ross Gordon were on the bench.
Former Skye player Dougie Rankin was in goal for the Inverness side who play two leagues below the islanders in Mowi North Division 1.
Skye took the lead on seven minutes when Iain MacInnes got across his marker to turn home a ball from the left after Dan MacDonald had let it run.
Kenny Cushnie volleyed the ball by the keeper from 30 yards out on 25 minutes, with his strike soaring into the roof of the net after his initial effort had been blocked.
Dan MacDonald made it 3-0 on 34 minutes, flicking home a re-bound after William MacKinnon’s long-range effort had been saved by Dougie Rankin.
Referee John MacRitchie awarded Skye a penalty for a “kick” three minutes into the second half and substitute Murphy Henderson stepped up to blast the ball home, shoulder high past a helpless keeper.
William MacKinnon added a fifth on 68 minutes, sending the ball into the roof of the net from Dan MacDonald’s free-hit.
Three minutes later, Jamie Gillies found space and his deflected strike from distance came following Ross Nicolson’s lifted free-hit.
Ruaraidh Hughes got some consolation for Inverness on 83 minutes, converting a penalty low into the corner of the net after James Morrison had been penalised for a “kick”.
Skye manager Willie MacDonald spoke afterwards and was full of praise for debutant Iain MacInnes.
MacDonald said: “Iain lit up the game and was untouchable during the first half hour. He was our best player and a threat every time he got the ball.
“It was also nice to see Murphy Henderson scoring before he moves to Australia. He smashed home the penalty and is such a good servant, on and off the field. We’ll miss him big time.”
Kilmallie 2
Newtonmore 3
Record MacTavish Cup winners Newtonmore fended off a Kilmallie fightback to win at Canal Parks.
Drew MacDonald gave Newtonmore the lead on 22 minutes, with Struan Ross adding a second on 37 minutes.
When Drew MacDonald got his second four minutes into the second half, Newtonmore had what looked to be a comfortable 3-0 lead.
However, Shane O’Rua pulled a goal back a couple of minutes short of the hour and substitute Martyn Cameron cut the deficit to a single goal on 88 minutes. But the visitors stayed ahead to claim a place in the semi-finals.
Fort William 4
Beauly 1
Fort William and Beauly went into their tie at An Aird with 100 per cent records and their pairing meant at least one side from outside shinty’s topflight would make the semi-final draw.
Fort William’s Archie MacKinnon recovered from a knock in time to play but Victor Smith, Hamish Shaw, Lachie Shaw, Ali MacRae, Lewis Morrison and Cameron Grant were all missing and a series of call-ups left a weakened Fort William second team.
Cam Stephen gave Fort William the lead on 24 minutes and Graham Campbell added a second on the stroke of half-time.
Beauly’s Ryan MacKay halved Fort William’s lead with 20 minutes remaining but Archie MacKinnon made it 3-1 five minutes later and Ryan Boyle completed the scoring on 83 minutes.
A delighted Fort William co-manager Alan Knox said: “That was tough as Beauly are a good side, but we took our chances. We were missing a few but everyone who came in stepped up.
“We have another big game on Saturday against Kilmallie in the Camanachd Cup at the Canal, but we’ll continue to take just one game at a time.”

Kinlochshiel got off to a great start as Keith MacRae ran through to slip the ball home after a couple of minutes. John MacRae on 15 minutes and Zander MacRae on 36 minutes made it 3-0 at half- time.
The second half was just a couple of minutes old when referee Jamie MacPherson awarded Kinlochshiel a penalty. John MacRae saw his effort saved, but the ball was played back into the danger area from the wing and Zander MacRae finished well to notch his second goal of the game.
John MacRae scored his second with 20 minutes remaining to make it 5-0.
Lochaber’s Gregor Cameron was sent off with 10 minutes remaining following a challenge on Arron Jack.
