NFU Scotland has recognised the commitment of long-serving Mid Argyll member John Semple by handing him the prestigious Argyll and the Islands Stalwart Award for 2024.
The honour was created in 2016 in recognition and memory of the dedication shown by Mull’s Bert Leitch, Lagganulva, and Lachlan MacLean, Knock, who represented farmers and crofters both regionally and nationally for many years before passing away in 2015.
The award is presented annually to either a NFUS member who has followed in their footsteps and given time and effort to the work of the union in Argyll and the islands, or someone who has made a significant contribution to agriculture in the area.
Having previously worked alongside both Bert and Lachlan, John has been involved in the Mid Argyll branch for more than 25 years, including six years served as chair. He has also represented the region on many of the commodity committees at head office.
The farmer, who is originally from Southend, was presented with the quaich at a recent Argyll and the Islands regional board meeting by regional chair Duncan Macalister and Sybil MacPherson, vice regional chair and the inaugural winner of the stalwart award in 2017.
