A GP who chairs an international charity with a vision to transform African and South American communities has inspired members of Southend SWI.
The ‘Rural’ ladies welcomed Vine Trust chairperson Dr Claire Bawn as the guest speaker at their latest meeting.
Dr Bawn has been involved with the work of Vine Trust since 2011. Formerly a medical practice partner, she now divides her time between locum work across Scotland and volunteering with the charity.
Based in Leith, the trust works with long-term Peruvian and Tanzanian partners as they strengthen health systems and implement construction projects in isolated and vulnerable communities on the Amazon and on Lake Victoria.
A Southend SWI spokesperson said: “Claire told us about her experiences aboard medical ships, providing primary care to isolated communities as part of medical programmes.
“She also showed slides of the medical help they brought to a lot of communities despite how basic the ships were.”
On behalf of the SWI ladies, Kathleen Martin thanked Dr Bawn for giving them such a great insight into the work of the Vine Trust and the efforts of its volunteers.
