Arran Police are investigating a number of heating oil thefts and are appealing for Arran residents to be on the lookout and to report any suspicious behaviour.
While the number of reports is fairly small at the moment, there are concerns further incidents will come to light as holiday home owners return to their properties.
Arran police sergeant Kevin Blackley said: “There have been several instances of theft of heating oil, primarily from homes which have been unoccupied for longer periods over the winter. The quantities involved would suggest a vehicle has been used. If anyone sees a vehicle in suspicious circumstances around your own or neighbouring properties, please report it to police straight away.
"Any information which could help trace those responsible can be made by calling 101 or anonymously via CrimeStoppers, either online or by calling 0800 555111.
Unfortunately, owing to rising oil prices, heating oil theft has become more frequent across Scotland.
Sergeant Blackley suggested fitting an oil tank cage, fitting a good quality padlock to your tank, installing CCTV or sensor lights or installing a wireless tank alarm could deter theives.
If you witness heating oil being stolen, Police Scotland says it can be helpful to take photographs of suspects or the number plate of their car, but only if it is safe to do so. However, they stress it is important to never approach suspects.
