The much-loved benches removed from Lochgilphead front green are to be brought back - but not in time for summer.
The wooden seats, which resembled church pews, were taken away when the are underwent at multi-million pound makeover.
Since the new green opened, people in Lochgilphead have been asking about the benches and when they would return.
They were a popular meeting spot with views looking towards the top of the town on one side and down Loch Fyne on the other.
When they didn’t return, there was a public outcry in the town as they were considered an important place for people to meet and socialise.
They were discovered being stored at a council yard, exposed to the elements and not in the best condition, but thanks to local group Shed-na-mara, based at Achnamara, it seems they can yet be saved.
James Livingston from the restoration group has examined them and believes they can be brought back to life.
He said: “We have dismantled one of the benches and started sanding off the layers of paint and varnish. The wood is mostly sound and it does look like it will be possible to resurrect them.
"We have started dismantling the second bench, which is proving to be a difficult and time-consuming task.
"Although it does look as if we can rebuild the famous old landmarks by patching in new timber, it will be some time before we’re at that stage in the project to think about returning them to the green."
James says it is ’highly unlikely’ that the benches will be back this summer.
He added: "Given the work that is needing to be carried out, I think that will be a tough ask, but hopefully we will see them back when they are ready."
