The polite, happy children and the nurturing headteacher and staff at Tayvallich Primary School have been praised by inspectors.
A team of inspectors from Education Scotland visited the school and early learning childcare centre in November, with the school receiving a glowing report with ‘goods’ and ‘very goods’ across the board.
Inspectors praised the school community and the support available to children and families with a focus on "continuous improvement an "staff fostering an inclusive learning environment" where "children and their families make a strong contribution to progressing priorities".
Lena Carter, joint head teacher of Tayvallich and Glassary Primary Schools said: “I am so very proud of our school community for evidencing what a fantastic learning environment we have created in Tayvallich. Of crucial importance to us is the recognition in the report that staff create ‘a calm, caring and nurturing ethos and have very positive relationships with each other and children, where the children are polite and respectful to each other, adults and school visitors’."
Now a list of key strengths and areas for improvement has been published online in a letter to parents and carers. They include strong, positive relationships between adults and children are based on mutual respect and understanding. Polite, happy children work well together in the mixed aged classes. They are keen to learn and show respect and kindness to each other. Parents feel like valued partners in their child’s learning thanks to successful partnership working between staff and parents.
Staff in the early learning centre provide children with rich, real-life learning opportunities using the local environment and the wider community well.
Children in the early learning centre are provided with opportunities to play and learn with children in the primary school.
Areas for improvement were identified and discussed with the headteacher and a representative from Argyll and Bute Council.
The headteacher and staff should continue developing approaches for planning learning. This will help them to raise attainment further.
They should also continue to “develop and embed consistent approaches to assessing children’s learning.” And continue to work together to achieve consistency in their judgements about children’s progress and attainment.
Argyll and Bute Council’s policy lead for education, Councillor Yvonne McNeilly, said: “Well done to everyone at Tayvallich Primary School and ELC for such a brilliant report. This is a great example of creating a school community that fosters input from everyone involved in providing the best possible start for all children.
"Our Education Strategy sets out clear ambition to help children start out on their education journey and an essential part of that is looking at individual needs and working with children and families to get it right for very child.
"It’s clear from the report that staff are working incredibly hard to provide an inclusive environment where staff work together to remove barriers to learning, enabling them to achieve and transition well into primary school.”
A spokesman for the Education Scotland team said: “We are confident that the school has the capacity to continue to improve and so we will make no more visits in connection with this inspection. Argyll and Bute Council will inform parents/carers about the school’s progress as part of its arrangements for reporting on the quality of its schools.”
