I found – somewhat surprisingly – my spirits lifted when browsing the sports section of this great paper the other day.
Why? There was simply so much positivity – or there was for me at any rate.
First, and rather obviously, was the wonderful news for Oban couple Carol and Donald MacInnes, who are understandably ’overjoyed’ after daughter Keanna, 22, was picked to compete in the 200m butterfly – and possibly the medley relay and the 100m butterfly – at the Olympics in Paris La Defense Arena at the end of July.
I cannot imagine the level of pride they must have and I’m sure I will not be alone in watching out for Keanna when the Olympics take place.
Then there was a stonking good win away from home for Oban Saints 2010s to keep them in their league’s title race. At a time when there are mutterings about the club’s playing resources, it is good to know the future stars are in the pipeline.
Similarly, Oban Lorne RFC are hoping for a top three finish in their West Division One league after a cracking victory over Kilmarnock.
Shinty (of which I know hee-haw) appears to be in rude good health, and there are numerous other reports of successes in various sports.
Very well done to everyone.
I mentioned back in March the work going on at the Regent Hotel on Oban’s Esplanade and how important it is to the town.
You will not be surprised then if I celebrate the reopening of this landmark business, especially given its location right in the heart of the town.
The striking building featured large in last week’s Oban Times and looks fantastic. It is a welcome return to the Oban hospitality sector.
And finally…my son Stewart was married at the weekend to the lovely Samantha, following in the footsteps of his sister Joanna, who wed splendid fellow Robert last June.
The missus and I could not be happier for them both.
