Biding her time?
I’ve said before that I am not very political, to which end I offer an observation purely intended to prompt debate.
By the time you read this, Johny Swinney may be our new First Minister and leader of the SNP; I couldn’t care less. Some folk were surprised that MSP Kate Forbes didn’t try for it; not I.
I suspect that young Ms Forbes, still in her 30s, will have been advised that the leadership is poisoned chalice at the moment and she might want to bide her time before trying to land the top job.
Will she eventually be SNP leader and First Minister? I don’t doubt it.
Positively inspiring
I found my spirits lifted considerably last week by one page alone in The Oban Times. It was page two and boasted three stories, none of which was linked.
First was the brilliant idea from Oban woman Frances Grant who decided to get a mural painted at the back of her house instead of staring at a blank wall.
Artist Danielle Morrison has done a fabulous job in painting blue skies, a coral beach, palm trees, a boat, a giant tortoise and a Coco da Mer nut that is rare to the Seychelles.
Then there was the report of a life-saving use of the Heimlich manoeuvre by young Lucy Anderson, a part-time staff member at the Lorne Bar in Oban, who grabbed a choking man and carried out the Heimlich manoeuvre, which she learned years ago on a first aid course while working as a carer. Fantastic!
And, finally, there was the tale of Argyll and Bute’s new area police commander; Chief Superintendent Gary I’Anson will oversee operations across the region, bringing a wealth of experience in local, operational and strategic policing to the job.
I know little about policing, of course, but I would be willing to bet that from a senior officer’s perspective, being appointed boss in our region is probably about as good as it gets. I hope he enjoys his time in our area.
