An expression of interest into becoming Scotland’s third National Park has been put forward by the Lochaber National Park Working group on the condition that the Scottish Government agrees to a statutory vote on any final proposal.
The Scottish Government has committed to the designation of at least one new National Park by 2026 and that any new National Park should be designated in response to local community demand.
Funding for the project has been ringfenced and will not be made available for funding of any other causes.
If the nomination for Lochaber is accepted then the next stage would be an independent consultation managed by Scottish Government.
The consultation would seek input on all aspects including the specific aims and objectives, how the Park
would be managed and the area that would be included in the Park.
Following this consultation and once a definite proposal had been developed, a vote would be put to all residents within the area.
This is a chance for the people of Lochaber to have their say. There have been some strong and valid opinions from both sides over the last few months and many mixed, and often uninformed, messages flying out of social media.
Let us now look at the facts as they are presented and make an informed decision on the future of our region.
