Do any Courier readers recognise this pavilion which features in photographs of two Campbeltown sports teams?
The same white picket fence panelling can be seen in two photographs submitted by Catherine Spence. The images include her grandfather, Joseph Black, in two different teams.
One image shows Kintyre Football Club in 1898-99 and the other is of a cricket team in 1901.
Catherine has no idea where the sports pavilion was located. If you know, please get in touch via Facebook, by emailing editor@campbeltowncourier.co.uk or by calling 01586 554646.
The Black family was well known in the area for owning a long-established baking and confectionery business, first located in what is now Union Street, before moving to Saddell Street.
Catherine’s grandfather Joseph inherited the business and his sons, Joe, and Catherine’s dad David, followed in his footsteps by working for the family bakery.
“Uncle Joe took over the business and became well known all over for his wedding cakes,” said Catherine.
So renowned were his cakes that, in January 1935, one was sent in two specially prepared boxes to India for the wedding of Grace Macnish, daughter of Sir Charles and Lady Cunningham, and Captain Rollo Scott Wright at St Andrew’s Church, in what was then known as Madras and is present day Chennai.
The month before, another of his cakes was sent to the USA for the marriage of Jenny Sommerville and James Hall.
