Mowi proudly stands with other businesses, charities and groups nationwide to recognise the passion and skills volunteers so generously share.
In the Highlands and Islands, communities depend on mutual support, so volunteers often provide a critical lifeline. Mowi employees are proud to commit their time and expertise far beyond their day jobs, providing important services to their fellow residents.
Ben Hadfield, Mowi’s Chief Operating Officer of Farming in Scotland, Ireland, The Faroes and Canada East, says: “Many of our farms are in remote and rural communities across the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Mowi is often the main employer in these areas, and our staff members are also integral to the community, volunteering as part of the coastguard, mountain rescue, community councils, club coaches, fire services and many more.
This Volunteers’ Week we would like to give a shout out to all the wonderful helpers within the Mowi team for the part they play in their communities. In areas where professional services can be stretched thin, these local heroes provide essential capacity, local knowledge and unwavering dedication. Your time and efforts are appreciated, so a huge thank you!”
Empowering a culture of service
Mowi understands the immense value that volunteers bring to the communities where its employees live and work. Scotland celebrates its own for Volunteers’ Week 2025 Volunteers’ Week is an annual UK-wide campaign held from the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers.
Launched in 1984, the initiative provides organisations and communities a platform to thank volunteers for their invaluable efforts and highlights the diversity of volunteer work across the UK. Volunteers’ Week is led by the UK Volunteering Forum, a partnership between Volunteer Scotland, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) and Volunteer Now in Northern Ireland.
Through flexible working arrangements, support for training and a workplace culture that celebrates community involvement, team members feel enabled to balance their professional responsibilities with their crucial voluntary commitments. The dedication of Mowi employees volunteering across the Highlands and Islands is a powerful testament to their connection to their communities. Their service is a vital contribution, supported by their employer, which strengthens everyone’s safety, well-being and resilience.

Testimonials:
Alistair Docherty
Environmental Field Scientist
Glencoe Mountain Rescue
“I choose to volunteer in the mountain rescue because it is such a direct way of helping people in distress. It’s also a good way of giving back to the outdoor community. The most satisfying part of a rescue is knowing that my experience, combined with the power of teamwork, has turned someone’s bad day around. Mowi allows me the flexibility to attend callouts when it is practical to do so. They have been very supportive of my voluntary work over several years.”
Brad Cain
Harvest Technician
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service / Mountain Bothies Association
“My role is a retained firefighter. It is a great feeling to be involved in keeping the area safe in which I live, and I look forward to serving for as many years as I am able. I am also a Maintenance Officer for Sourlies bothy, located at the end of Loch Nevis. In the past two years I have overseen the installation of a log-burning stove, and I’ve just returned from installing a composting toilet that will help preserve the natural beauty found in this unique place.”
Rosie Curtis
Manager at MacLean’s Nose
“My dad served in the Coast Guard for over 30 years, and he inspired my brother, sister, and me to follow in his footsteps. Living in a small rural community, it’s vital that we have essential services like the Coast Guard and fire teams. Every rescue presents its own challenges, but being first on the scene and able to help by using our skills is incredibly rewarding. Thanks to the support of businesses like Mowi, we’re able to remain available 24/7. Their partnership with our community is one of the key reasons we still have Fire, Coast Guard, and lifeboat teams in rural areas.”
Sean Anderson
Production Director, Mowi Scotland
“Our teams live and work in some of the most beautiful coastal areas in Scotland, so it’s only right that we play an active role in keeping them clean. Beach cleans are more than just tidying up – they’re a way for us to give back to the communities we’re a part of and to protect the marine environment we all depend on. We are grateful to all of our staff for helping to make a difference.”
