I wonder if, like me, you have been gripped by the drama over the recent ‘Traitors’ series.
Twenty-two players together in a Scottish castle, with contestants secretly named ‘Faithful’ or ‘Traitor’.
The Faithful work together to identify and banish the Traitors from the game, and the Traitors secretly ‘murder’ the Faithful one by one while remaining undetected.
The nightly ‘round table’ discussion highlights all kinds of human traits and group dynamics. Opinions are solidified or altered by the power of suggestion and crowd mentality.
It’s eye-opening to see how people can know their own mind, only to be influenced down a path of misguided thinking by a majority view.
Something for us all to be aware of. We can experience it personally in daily life and more and more by social media, where algorithms can create echo chambers of narrow thought. This narrows our viewpoint and excludes consideration of other people’s world views and opinions.
It’s also fascinating to see how thoroughly decent people can act the part of Traitor.
If asked the question, “Are you a Faithful?”, how would you and I fare? “Yes,” “No,” “Sometimes,” or “If only you knew...”?
Our world needs faithfulness, loyalty and trust, and all of us can fall short.
In Christian thought, grace and forgiveness meet us in our failings, and help is at hand for new beginnings as we co-operate with God’s spirit helping us from the inside out; faithfulness is named as one of the nine fruits of this experience.
God Himself is eternally faithful and, though we can be faithless, He cannot deny His own character. He is ever present to transform our treachery into faithfulness.
