Young members of Arran Youth Foundations (AYF) have created an art sculpture in Brodick ferry terminal with the aim of highlighting concerns about plastic waste.
The sculpture is made entirely of plastic bottles from school lunches and was designed to look like a whale’s tail.
The idea first came about after a visit to the group by Helen How of Think About Plastic (TAP).
Helen encouraged the youngsters to take part in the TAP surveying of Lamlash beach. The initiative, run in association with Marine Conservation Society, involves volunteer groups collecting and analysing plastic rubbish washed up or discarded on island beaches.
As part of this campaign, AYF members will be doing quarterly beach cleans and have recently completed a number of litter picks in their local villages.
AYF members decided to create the whale’s tail as an art installation in the hope that it can help raise awareness of the threats of plastic pollution in Arran’s seas and beaches.
TAP Arran was established in 2018 to raise awareness about marine littering and the organisation encourages local groups and businesses to try to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic.
