Arran residents will soon be able to see familiar faces and landscapes on their televisions when an Arran family stars in the eighth series of the popular BBC documentary This Farming Life.
Farmers, Callum and Zara Lindsay and their two children, Lotti and Lucie, will regularly feature in the 12-episode series, along with other farming families from Campbeltown, the Isle of Lewis, Moffat and Dornoch.
The series captures the highs and lows of modern farming after documenting the lives of farming families over 10 months of filming in 2025.
The Lindsay family operate Hillside Farm in the south end of the island and run an upland hill unit at Monyquil where they raise hill sheep and hill cattle. The family moved to Arran in 2023 to pursue Callum’s childhood dream of hill farming.
When the opportunity arose to take on their 150 acre farm and the 4,000 acres of challenging tenanted hill terrain they accepted the challenge, however, after two years of investing heavily in farm repairs and livestock, they needed to turn a profit.
Throughout the series the family face constant financial pressures, wildlife predation issues, and the after-effects of a serious quad bike accident. Working hard to establish a sustainable hill farming operation and raise their two young daughters, the series highlights their determination to continue
traditional hill farming on the island where weather, wildlife, and economics constantly
test their resolve, yet community spirit and perseverance keep their dreams alive.
Episode three of the series, called The perils of quad bikes, covers the story of Callum’s quad bike accident which left him badly injured after his quad bike hit a stone and he landed on his neck, unconscious. The traumatic incident led to Callum playing a major role in a safety campaign, Mind Your Head, run by Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RSABI) and the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies).
The series will air on BBC Scotland on Tuesdays at 8pm, and on BBC Two on Thursdays at 8pm. All 12 episodes will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
