CalMac’s popular modern apprentice scheme is now welcoming
For the next two weeks, young people will be able to apply for a spot on the coveted programme which has already produced careers for many local people.
CalMac is a recognised leader of seagoing apprenticeships, named by the Merchant Navy Training Board as one of the top five UK companies for marine apprentice schemes.
The scheme is designed to help young people who are passionate about the maritime sector gain essential qualifications and the experience necessary for a successful career within the sector.
Upon completion of the programme, the apprentices will have an opportunity to transition into permanent roles with CalMac, working larger vessels across the network.
There are currently two options within the programme – Engine Rating and Deck Rating. All apprentices train and study between the City of Glasgow Nautical College and CalMac vessels for between 12 and 16 months.
Since 2013, CalMac has recruited a total of 194 apprentices, with 92 per cent graduating and 83 per cent now working permanently for CalMac. They account for more than 10 per cent of the CalMac workforce.
The current intake live in communities served by CalMac, including Lewis, Oban, Mallaig, Uig, Kintyre and Inverclyde. Three Obanites have progressed through the course well, namely Eilidh Macfadyen, Ross Lamont Chalmers and Morne Bootsma.
Xanthe Thomson, 18, from Port Glasgow, is an engine rating and joined the programme in September 2026. She said: “I grew up around cars and motorbikes and have always been good at working with my hands.
“My first boat after starting in September was MV Loch Seaforth which was lovely, I’ve never been to Stornoway or Ullapool before, I’d love to see more new places. Everyone on the boat was very nice, they really looked after me.
“I’ve enjoyed everything about the course; I’m learning new skills every day and am meeting new people. All the apprentices get on so well, it feels like we are part of the CalMac family.
“I would really like to become a chief engineer when I am more experienced and work my way up the ranks. CalMac looks after us so well.”
Diane Burke, CalMac’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Our popular modern
“The scheme also demonstrates our commitment to supporting local economies and helping the communities we serve to thrive.”
