The fight against plans for a house at Calgary Bay has seen unprecedented support on Mull and beyond, as objections fly past 500. At the time of writing, they sit at 542.
What began as local outrage has become a fully fledged campaign with supporters from all over the UK.
In the weeks since plans for a new four bedroom modern home along Calgary’s old pier track were spotted on Argyll and Bute Council’s planning portal, community figures have created a social media campaign to fight against them.
Videos and an entire website detailing how to object have been created and widely shared, with tens of new letters written every day.
One of those many, many objection letters comes from former Oban Times columnist Daniel Brooks, the Mullman himself.
Before his comeback to column writing, Daniel said that the plan even being considered was "insanity" and warned of the detrimental effect it could have on the area’s wildlife.
"It’s a beautiful wild stretch of coastline," he said, "and thousands of tourists enjoy visiting it every year.
"There’s at least two active otter holts that wouldn’t just be disturbed but completely destroyed by this development. Otters build under the track, the track which they’re going to widen.
"One of those holts has been their since I was a teenager, some 40 something years. It’s crucial to countless otters in the area, it’s a vital for a female otter, male otters in the area she breeds with, new cubs and old cubs.
"There is also regularly golden eagles hunting over that site, we might even end up loosing those pair that breed up there.
"The rare Slender Scotch Burnet Moth and Transparent Burnet Moth live up there too.
"One of the biggest reasons tourists come to Mull is because its still a wild place. It’s rare now in the world to find wild untouched stretches of coastline, because it’s all getting developed.
"It’s the number one wildlife tourism destination in the UK now.
"This is just some rich property developer down in London who wants to make an extra buck.
"There’s no end to the objections that you can make for this plan. Surely you can’t ignore that many objections."
Calgary resident Lucy MacKenzie, added: "These objections are not rooted in opposition to development itself. Rather, they reflect serious and considered concerns about development at this specific location and the wide-ranging impact it would have.
"Submissions consistently highlight potential consequences across multiple dimensions: ecological integrity, cultural heritage, historical and archaeological significance, landscape character, and the long-term economic sustainability of the area.
"Calgary is valued not simply as a place, but as a living landscape that supports local businesses, sustains tourism, strengthens community identity, and plays a vital role in the island’s repopulation and economic resilience. Many fear that the proposed development risks undermining the very qualities that make the area so special and economically viable.
"A review of the objections reveals the consistency and seriousness of these concerns. The message is clear: this is not about resisting change — it is about ensuring that Calgary is protected thoughtfully and responsibly for future generations."
As part of the campaign against the house, Daniel Brooks has contacted BBC Springwatch presenter Iolo Williams who has expressed his discontent with the plans on social media, and other notable wildlife celebrities.
Agent Dualchas Architects were asked what they made of the backlash and if they would be withdrawing the plans as a result, but did not respond before our deadline.
The deadline to submit feedback is March 4. To view the plans in full, go to the council’s planning portal and use reference 26/00126/PP.
