A man walked away unscathed when his car flipped over onto its roof and landed in a field near Glencraigs Farm by the A83 - but his driving licence and bank balance did not.
Gavin Strang, 48, lost his licence for four months and was ordered to pay a £600 fine plus surcharge as a result of incident, which happened on August 6 last year.
Strang, of Homeview, Campbeltown, admitted driving without due care and attention and consideration for other road users at the entrance to the road to the Sound of Kintyre from the A83; attempting to overtake a tractor and trailer when unsafe to do so, striking the grass verge and causing his vehicle to collide with the trailer.
Procurator fiscal depute Raeesa Ahmed told the town’s sheriff court how police went to the junction of the Sound of Kintyre Road with the A83 after a report of a one-vehicle accident.
She said: “Officers arrived to find the accused’s motor vehicle on its roof in a field; he was already out of the vehicle, uninjured.”
Sheriff Euan Cameron heard that Strang had been travelling behind an agricultural tractor which was towing a trailer and had attempted to overtake on a narrow stretch of the road.
During the course of the manoeuvre, his vehicle had struck the verge, then rebounded to strike the trailer causing it to flip up and land in the field.
Strang’s defence agent Stephen MacSporran said his client travelled up to 75,000 miles a year in the course of his forestry work. He said that he had been offered a fixed penalty fine for the incident but had failed to complete the paperwork in time and the matter had come to court.
Mr MacSporran added that a driving ban “would have a devastating impact" on his client’s business.
Sheriff Cameron told Strang he had thought carefully before deciding the appropriate punishment.
He added “It is my opinion that you have a significant problem with your driving Mr Strang, and as a such a period of disqualification is the required."
