By Reverend Canon Simon Mackenzie
Lent began early this year, with Ash Wednesday, February 14, the day after Pancake Day, coinciding with St Valentine’s Day. It’s all about love. The love we feel for another person is an image of God’s love for us.
Lent is a time to stock up again on loving. It was loving which brought us into the world; loving can provide the most deeply personal affirmation we receive and give in our lives; and we hope that love will surround us as we leave this life. God’s love undergirds every moment of our living. That is why it is so easy to overlook it.
So Lent is a time to pause and rediscover the love in which our lives are rooted. On Wednesday mornings the Lenten Coffee and Discussion Group will meet at St Margaret’s, led by the Revd Barry Roberts, who is with us once more for Lent and Easter. This is a very informal group. The topic is “The kingdom of heaven is like....” – as so many of Jesus’s parables begin.
Everybody is invited: if you would prefer an evening meeting, please contact the Revd Barry by telephone or text on 07949 427791. He will be very happy to arrange something. We hope to hold one of the group meetings at the Sannox Centre, with the possibility of making it a day retreat.
For the people of St Margaret’s it is also the start of a rather busy period. Looking ahead, the Festival of the Sea will be held again this year on Sunday August 11. More details later.
An exciting art project is also under way. Students of the High School art department have designed a large image of our patron, St Margaret. This will be realized by Midton Acrylics of Lochgilphead, and will beautify the exterior wall of the church. We hope this will be ready soon after Easter.
Over half of the funding for this project has been achieved. If you would like to help us reach our target, donations, in memory of a loved one or some other important event in your life, will be gratefully received. Brochures are available in church, or from the Revd Barry.
The Revd Barry is always available for confidential conversation or discussion. He would love to hear from you.
