An agency care worker travelling from Motherwell to Campbeltown for a shift in a nursing home committed a string of driving offences between Furnace and Westport Beach.
The March sitting of Campbeltown Sheriff Court heard that Mazher Khan repeatedly drove at excessive speeds and on the wrong side of the road when it was unsafe, on the A83 on August 30 last year.
He admitted driving without due care and attention and consideration for other road users between Furnace and elsewhere between Westport Beach and Drum Farm.
Khan, 49, of Clapperhowe Road in Motherwell, was finally stopped by police after he overtook on a blind bend which had roadside chevron signs plus road markings. The vehicle he overtook and ones following had to brake and take evasive actions to avoid a collision.
Procurator fiscal depute Raeesa Ahmed said police were made aware of his driving during his journey. An off-duty police office travelling on the A83 noted his driving near Furnace; positioning his vehicle in the middle of the road, following closely behind, overtaking and then driving away at speed.
Another motorist in Ardrishaig saw Ahmed driving behind him in the middle of the road straddling the white line and continuing to do this into the Tarbert area.
Once contacted, the police caught up with him; Ahmed was seen to overtake on a blind summit.
Near to Westport Beach, he carried out an overtaking manoeuvre on a sharp bend which had clear road markings and a chevron traffic sign.
“The accused went onto the other side of the road and the other drivers had to sharply apply brakes to avoid a collision,” said the fiscal.
Police officers stopped him and he was offered a fixed penalty ticket but he told them: “I want my day in court”.
In court, his defence agent, John B McGeechan, said Ahmed was a care home worker with an agency and was travelling to work a night-shift in Kintyre.
Sheriff Euan Cameron handed down a fine of £450 and an 11-month driving disqualification, saying: “I am surprised you were offered a fixed penalty for overtaking on a blind corner.”
He added: “This was an appalling course of driving, you endangered not only yourself but other road users at the time.”
