A spruce up of Glenshellach Road bagged 42 sacks of waste as this year’s Oban Spring Clean gets under way.
All of that was collected in just five days of litter-picking by the ’lone ranger’ volunteer who lives in the area and has asked to remain anonymous.
He started in the business park near the college, where he collected eight bagfuls in just a short space of time. There were also about six bags of waste gathered near the railway line, where much of the rubbish was older and buried beneath leaves and soil.
The remainder came from the verges of Glenshellach Road and Glengallen Road, from around the Lon Mor, which is the boggy meadow between the two roads.
He told Oban Spring Clean organisers that he first started picking up litter along the roadside about four years ago after noticing it piling up while out walking.
Keep Oban Beautiful’s Claire Rizos told us: "In the past, this gentleman has been a major contributor to the overall total of waste collected with around 90 bags each year, and numerous larger items such as beds and bicycles.
"He’s dismayed that people continue to dump their waste, but impressed with the help given to him by Argyll and Bute Council’s waste team who are always very prompt at collecting the bags."
Anyone wanting to help out by taking part in this year’s Oban Spring Clean will find there are plenty of areas needing some attention, and Claire is inviting everyone to get involved on the weekend of March 23 and 24.
Volunteers are asked to let her know in advance which area they plan to clean, or they can also join a larger group for litter picks starting at 10am on both days from Tesco car park.
There will also be a hub in the town centre where litter pickers and other kit can be collected and returned.
