A multi-million-pound regeneration project that changed the face of key buildings in Lochgilphead’s town centre is to be the focus of an impact assessment.
Argyll and Bute Council wants to measure the effect its Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) has had on the local community and those visiting the town.
The £2.3 million project was funded by the council and Historic Environment Scotland, along with contributions from building owners. Its remit was to focus on Lochgilphead’s built heritage by renovating six of the town’s historic buildings while promoting traditional skills.
“It has been wonderful to see buildings that play such an important role in the day-to-day life of the wider Mid Argyll community brought back to their former splendour and making Lochgilphead more attractive to visitors and a source of pride for its community,” Councillor Math Campbell-Sturgess policy lead for business development said.
The priority buildings that were repaired and conserved through Lochgilphead CARS were on Argyll Street and Colchester Square.
In addition, three shopfront improvement projects were completed, alongside smaller scale repair work and exterior refurbishments. The grant awards for these projects included funding from the Scottish Government’s Place Based Investment Programme.
The council’s stated aim for the project was to improve the historic fabric and appearance of Lochgilphead town centre and now it has launched a consultation process to ascertain what impact the work has had.
“With Lochgilphead Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme now complete, residents and visitors to the town are being asked for their views on what difference the improvements have made to life and business in the area,” a council spokesperson said.
“These views will help measure the impact of the regeneration scheme and identify lessons to take forward to future schemes.”
