Ever growing in popularity, Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ) has been part of the Lochaber sporting scene for some years, with quite a few participants going on to win national awards.
After a brief pause in operation due to its Corpach base no longer being available, BJJ is now "back on the mats" thanks to coach Eddie Lopez who has launched the new Club, Wulver Jiu-Jistu in the Nevis Centre.
With his tremendous enthusiasm, Eddie, a purple belt with almost 11 years of experience in BJJ in addition to other martial arts disciplines, was keen not to lose the momentum built up by previous participants by ensuring a local outlet for their interests and activities.
While the Club starts with two mixed senior sessions (12 years- adult) per week, Eddie has plans to increase the number and range on offer including beginners, children’s and female only classes once the adult sessions have settled in to the new premises.
During their first "trial" class at the new venue four strangers arrived and asked to join in the training. Two of them were purple belts and the others with different levels of experience.
They were invited join in the activities and worked with regular members, freely sharing their experience
and obvious abilities on the mats.
Only at the end of the session did Eddie discover that all were professional stuntmen working on the new Highlander movie which is being filmed in the area.
He said: "We were expecting just a handful of the usual Fort BJJ/Lochaber Fight Team crew but then the door kept opening.
"Four visitors who said they were in town for work, politely asked if they could jump in. Of course we said yes.
What followed was not the gentle shake-down session we had planned as we now had two seriously solid purple belts, a very sharp MMA grappler and one lad who’d only recently started but already had a tight, well-built game.
"Safe to say, the rolls were lively.
“I am looking forward to welcoming new people as well as anyone who had previously attended and am also hoping to quickly build up to more classes and aspects of BJJ.
"There is a lot of talent and keenness to take part and I really want to build on and encourage this."

No experience is needed to join the Club, with mixed classes every Monday and Friday between 7.00pm -8.30pm, aged 12 years to adult.
The first trial session is free and beginner friendly. Class sizes are limited so please get in touch through social media or the website wulverbjj.com.
