A Scottish gymnast has made Kintyre proud after winning gold for Great Britain in an international acrobatic competition.
Tia Kidd, granddaughter of the late Len Sugarman from Machrihanish and niece of Gail Williams from Campbeltown, was selected alongside her two partners, Karla Hillcoat and Emillie Keenan, to represent Great Britain at senior level at last weekend’s Acrobatic Grand Prix in Poland.
The girls were crowned gold medal winners, with the highest score for their beautiful combined routine across all the age categories on the last day of the competition.
The girls’ Great Britain selection followed a rigorous process which included trials at Lilleshall National Sports Centre near Telford, as well as competing at the British Championships in July, where the girls also took the gold medal to become Senior Acrobatic British Champions 2024.
This is the second time the trio have been crowned British champions, after taking the gold in 2022 for the 13-19 age category.
Tia, 20, grew up in the West End of Glasgow but her family has a holiday house in her mum Yvonne’s home village of Machrihanish, so she spent many summers in Kintyre visiting family.
She started her gymnastic journey at the age of five, doing recreational gymnastics before moving to competitive level at the age of eight. She currently trains 80 hours a month, alongside studying to be a primary school teacher.
She has had great success over the years and has represented Scotland internationally on numerous occasions, having been part of the National Performance Pathway since the age of 12.
Being chosen to represent Great Britain is the pinnacle of Tia’s gymnastic career and such a huge achievement after 15 years of hard work and dedication to her sport.
Her grandfather Len, who was her biggest supporter, travelling to most of her competitions, would have been very proud of her latest achievements.
Tia and her partners have an Instagram page (@karla.tia.emillie) where people can see the trio in action and keep up to date with their success.
