Morar weather presenter Carol Kirkwood fought back tears as she announced that she would be leaving the BBC after more than 25 years with the corporation.
The 63-year-old broke the news of her departure on BBC Breakfast last week saying that she wanted to spend more time with husband Steve Randall, go travelling and continue writing.
Born and raised in Morar, Carol’s parents ran the Morar Hotel, and she has spoken fondly of growing up in the area.
Carol, her five sisters and two brothers, all attended the tiny two-teacher Lady Lovat Primary School. After attending Lochaber High School in Fort William she gained a BA in commerce from Napier College of Commerce and Technology (now Edinburgh Napier University).
After graduation, she joined the BBC’s secretarial reserve in London. After a series of internal moves, she presented slots on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4.
Following a short freelance career Carol rejoined joined the BBC in 1998 as a weather presenter. She will leave in April and said it had been an "absolute privilege" to bring viewers the weather.
She added: "I’ve loved my job, I’ve loved working at the BBC, but I love my husband more than my job."
Carol frequently returns to the Highlands to visit family and has described the area as her true home.
The local community in Morar has always expressed pride in Carol, including during her time on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015 when she and her dance partner Pasha Kovalev finished 10th.
