A fourth landslide on the B8035 on Mull is imminent due to Storm Amy and could pose a risk to life, say Argyll and Bute Council’s contractors.
The cliff face at Gribun rocks had previously been identified as unstable in the council’s drone survey, but now contractors AtkinsRéalis, which are carrying out a Geotechnical Risk Management Assessment on behalf of the council, have identified a significant risk of further rockfall in the same spot as previous failures.
Due to the amber warning of Storm Amy and a deluge of recent rainfall, another rockfall is now imminent and the danger is categorised as a risk to life.
But unfortunately, the signs indicating the road closure and barriers blocking the road have been removed by the public again.
This is the second time such an incident has happened, the first on August 16. The council have contacted Police Scotland about the incident.
The contractor said: "Following our site inspection yesterday (September 30), AtkinsRéalis has identified a significant risk of further rockfall at the top of the cliff in the region of the recent failure.
"Given the poor weather forecast for the next seven days, there is an elevated risk of additional rockfall along this closed section of the road.
"It’s important to note that the public had cleared the rock and debris from the previous event and are using the road despite the road closure, which means they are placing themselves and others at risk.
"The site visit also identified a rockfall risk across the wider 1.8km that was inspected."
In early July 2025, the B8035 on the Isle of Mull was closed to vehicles following the first rockfall. A second failure occurred in early August and a third in late September.
Councillors have said that they hope to have a timeline to reopen the road in the coming months, with the deadline for the report and decision on possible mitigation options November 17.
These options will range from low-cost interventions like signs or stopping-up of the road, to engineered solutions like rock netting, catchment areas and attenuator fencing.
Road users should absolutely not attempt to travel down the B8035 in the coming days, weeks and months until it is declared safe.
